Education in Hunterdon County

Education is a high priority in Hunterdon County. Over the last decade, our educational system has achieved great strides in meeting the needs of communities and individual students through programs in career and vocational education, gifted and talented education and basic skills remediation. Our public schools continually evaluate their programs, methods and materials, which consistently meet standards far above the state minimums.

Each municipality has its own grade school district, except Raritan Township and the Borough of Flemington, which are combined in a regional K-8 district. Within the County, there are 25 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and 4 high schools. There are 44 school buildings, 1,600 full-time instructional, supervisory and administrative personnel, and approximately 19,000 students in kindergarten through Grade 12.

Adult Education

  • Additionally, the Hunterdon County Adult Education Program established in 1969 is a highly successful Adult Education program, which has grown from 500 students in the late 1960s to an enrollment in excess of 15,000. This program is one of the finest and most comprehensive adult, continuing and community education programs in New Jersey and is presently being used as a model for others in designing both programming and activities.

Higher Education

  • Our County vocational school, Hunterdon County Polytech, offers both day and evening programs for both the high school student and the adult population in a number of occupational areas. Courses are designed to provide individuals with entry-level skills, upgrading existing skills, or preparing for a licensing examination. Occupational areas include computer-aided drafting, television broadcasting, agriculture, health, and automotive maintenance and repair. Upon completion of a program, the student can continue their education at the community college level, seek employment through a cooperative education program or enter an apprentice training program.

  • Hunterdon County, jointly with Somerset County, funds and sponsors the Raritan Valley Community College, a two-year college located in North Branch, New Jersey within Somerset County. The main campus of the college contains 4 principal buildings, a library, a theater ("A Performing Arts Center in Your Backyard"), a planetarium, an arts building, an Olympic sized swimming pool and a Center for Advanced Teaching and Technology.

Real Estate Tips
Financing Your Home >If You Are Self Employed

There's no question that it could be more difficult for you to get a mortgage loan if you are a free lance viola player than if you are a government accountant. Traditionally, lenders have been more cautious when evaluating loan applications of buyers who are self-employed than people who work for a regular salary.

However, if you are self-employed, there is no reason for you to shy away from applying for a home mortgage loan, especially if your earnings have been in the same field for at least two years. It is a good idea to meet with one or more loan officers before you begin your search. They will probably want to analyze your tax returns for the past 2 or 3 years, keeping in mind that many self employed people can look impoverished on paper, since you can write off some expenses that salaried individuals can not. Try to get pre-approval from the lender, and ask for a letter stating that you have pre-qualified for a loan which your real estate agent can attach to any offer you submit on a home. This will make you more attractive to the sellers.
